Women can shoot too! Visit Ladies Shooting - an informative, fun and inspiring website.

Women can shoot too! Visit Ladies Shooting - an informative, fun and inspiring website.

I recently stumbled across a fantastic website which is informative, fun, friendly, helpful and inspiring; www.ladies-shooting.com. In a hobby and sport which is dominated by men, this website must be visited by any ladies who have any involvement or interest in shooting. Ladies-Shooting also have forums, Facebook, Twitter and an array of experts willing to give you advice on just about anything.

The story behind Ladies Shooting began when Victoria Knowles-Lacks, 28 from Worcestershire picked up a shotgun a few years ago, she says “I had been beating a few times when I was younger but never really got that into it. I started having clay lessons in 2010. I was totally addicted immediately, I loved the buzz and just knew I was in it for the long haul. I wanted to get to a fairly decent standard then have a go at driven shooting. Thing is I didn’t find the people at the shooting club very forthcoming, nor could I really find any information on the internet detailing all of the important stuff, i.e the law on shooting, how to get a licence, what to wear, when I could shoot game, how or where to buy a gun, what sort of gun to get, how much to spend, what sort of things you can shoot – I had so many questions but couldn’t really find many answers which I thought was ridiculous. I tried a few more shooting grounds for lessons and couldn’t believe how few girls there were.” this inspired Victoria to do something about it “I spent a small fortune on shooting books, magazines, joined countless forums, websites, went to game fairs, country shows, joined BASC and literally hassled local farmers, found a local shoot and went and pestered a game keeper and literally drew information from wherever I could, learnt as I went along and threw it all onto a website.” Victoria put all this work in during her spare time whilst working full time, planning her wedding and training for a marathon – we think it was well worth it as the website is simply fantastic.

Ladies-Shooting.com went live on the 1st August 2011 and the idea of the site is to encourage more girls in to shooting, plus there are lots of informative guest blogs including The Pregnant Shot – a lady who is 6 months pregnant with twins and is still shooting, Davina Rowe who competes locally, fashion fixes, recipes and tonnes of technical advice such as how cartridges are made and buying your first gun.

Victoria also runs introductory clay days called ‘The Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club‘ days which are non-profit girls only fun days which include clays, cartridges, expert tuition, and a gorgeous afternoon tea which provide a really fun and safe environment to learn to shoot, with no men around and therefore no pressure (some guys can be really judegemental can’t they!).

Here at Barnack Country Clothes we are truly inspired by Victoria and her website Ladies-Shooting.com and our message to any ladies wanting to try shooting is to go for it! Our website www.barnack.co.uk stocks a range of Women’s Country Clothing suitable for shooting, beating, picking up or just going along for a social. We stock ladies shooting jackets, women’s breeks, shirts, jumpers, shooting socks, hats, gloves and scarves, wellies and leather country boots plus our Shooting Clothing area includes an array of Shooting Accessories from dog whistles to cartridge bags. We’d like to wish Victoria and any current or future lady guns lots of luck, keep up the good work!

Charlotte Kerwood, the Shooting Ambassador for Musto Clothing talks to the Telegraph Sport.

Charlotte Kerwood, the Shooting Ambassador for Musto Clothing talks to the Telegraph Sport.

Olympic hopeful and Shooting Ambassador for Musto Clothing; Charlotte Kerwood was interviewed by the Telegraph Sport in their 20 question section last week. Charlotte became an ambassador for Musto Clothes at the beginning of 2010 and is helping Musto develop their women’s range of clothing and technical items for shooting. Charlotte is hoping to be selected for the London 2012 Olympics in the shooting discipline; Olympic Trap. Read below to find out more about Charlotte:

‘Team GB trap shooting hopeful Charlotte Kerwood talks to Telegraph Sport about putting guns over exams and being a shopaholic.’

Telegraph Sport: Tell us who you are

Charlotte Kerwood: I’m Charlotte Kerwood. The discipline I shoot is called Olympic trap. I’ve been doing that now for about five years. Before that I shot a different discipline in which I won the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games titles.

TS: What is your present state of mind?

CK: At the moment I’m working really hard on qualifying for the Olympics as I haven’t quite made it yet. All my qualifiers are this year so I’m getting my head around all of that.

TS: Is your London 2012 build-up on track?

CK: Yes, definitely. I’m working hard on all areas. I’m working with my coach on the technical side of shooting, a psychologist and a personal trainer in the gym. I’m just trying to get everything ready for next year.

TS: When did you last skip training?

CK: I probably should have trained last Wednesday but I had a day for my sponsors to do. So it was a good reason to miss training.

TS: Have you ever lied to get out of training?

CK: Maybe. I might have made up a little white lie to get out of gym training.

TS: Is sporting success down to luck, talent or hard work?

CK: I think a bit of all three. I’ve had days where I felt really lucky, but it’s mostly down to hard work. I’m quite lucky in that I’m naturally talented but I wouldn’t be able to win an Olympic gold medal without hard work.

TS: Is winning silver, losing gold?

CK: I don’t think so, no. Any medal is a great achievement. If I won silver in London I would be over the moon. I wouldn’t be upset that I hadn’t won gold. I’d just be happy that I won a medal.

TS: How do you celebrate?

CK: I would go out with my friends and have a good time over a couple of glasses of wine.

TS: What is your idea of happiness?

CK: Just having my friends and family around me. Having people that care about me is happiness.

TS: What is your idea of misery?

CK: Being lonely or being on my own.

TS: Are you jealous of anyone?

CK: No, I don’t think so.

TS: Is there one thing you regret?

CK: I didn’t revise for any exams when I was at school because I was too busy shooting. If I could go back I’d try a bit harder at school.

TS: What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?

CK: I’m a bit of a shopaholic so it would definitely be something to do with fashion. I love going shopping. I’ve got a few Karen Millen dresses so it would probably be one of them. Unfortunately I’m not loaded so I can’t go to the really posh designer shops.

TS: When did you last clean your toilet?

CK: I’m lucky that I still live at home, so my mum does that.

TS: How much is a pint of milk?

CK: I would have no idea. I’m sorry.

TS: McDonalds or Burger King?

CK: Ah, Maccers definitely. I like the ice creams there.

TS: iPad or newspaper?

CK: Newspaper. [Telegraph?] Of course.

TS: You see someone kick a dog. What do you do?

CK: I’d probably go and shout at them. Poor little dog.

TS: Do you believe in UFOs?

CK: No, I don’t think so.

TS: What would you like written on your gravestone?

CK: Something like: “A happy, easy-going, laid-back person. Always smiling.”
